The Vermont Lakes and Ponds Program has released updated information on the management of aquatic invasive species.  In 2017, the Legislature enacted new rules designed to protect water resources, prevent infestations and spread, initiate rapid response where feasible, and minimize the economic and environmental impacts of aquatic invasive species.

The new guide outlines what it takes to achieve successful control of aquatic invasive species:

  • Prevention and early detection – the most effective way to reduce the impacts of aquatic invasive species is to keep them out in the first place
  • Up-to-date assessment of the population –  information on the native plant population as well as invasive species is key to understanding ecological impacts and planning next steps
  • A management plan ties together the impacts (physical, social, economic, environmental), appropriate treatments and the financial constraints to identify long-term goals
  • Evaluation and understanding of available options – all treatments have benefits, risks and long-term effects to be considered before management gets underway
  • Timing  – early response to new infestations is key to successful control; an Aquatic Nuisance Control Permit may be required.
