Who Shares Your Shoreline?
Shoreline Biodiversity on a Large Adirondack Lake

Shorelines are critical habitats for wildlife and natural corridors of movement through the landscape, frequently supporting higher levels of biodiversity than surrounding habitats. The condition of uplands surrounding lakes has direct consequences for water quality, with development, agricultural use, vegetation removal, and creation of impervious surface all contributing toward increased runoff, pollution, sedimentation, and declining water quality.

Michale Glennon, Director of Research at AWI, together with Graduate Research Fellow Alec Cimini, are documenting bird, mammal, and amphibian occurrence along the lakeshore and Michale will share the results of this work and provide recommendations for how you, too, can benefit wildlife on your shoreline. This Paul Smith’s College Adirondack Watershed Institute’s study of shoreline biodiversity on Upper Saranac Lake is supported by Lake Champlain Sea Grant.

This was our 9th Webinar in a series on Clean Water Projects.

Speaker:

Michale Glennon is the Director of Research at the Paul Smith’s College Adirondack Watershed Institute. She is an ecologist and uses wildlife as a tool for understanding threats to ecological integrity and watershed health. Michale obtained her B.S. in Environmental and Evolutionary Biology from Dartmouth College, and her M.S. and Ph.D. in Environmental and Forest Biology from SUNY-ESF.

Michale also leads Wool and Water, a data art project that blends fiber art with scientific data to create visual representations of changing water quality conditions in the Adirondacks and Lake Champlain Basin. This collaborative project uses knitting, crochet, weaving and other fiber arts to illustrate concepts and trends related to our waterways, and to provide inspiration for their protection.
