Lake Watershed Action Plans have identified properly constructed dirt roads as a main source of phosphorus reduction.

On April 16, 2026, the Federation of Vermont Lakes and Ponds hosted a highly informative and engaging webinar on recent efforts to identify, prioritize, design, and implement Clean Water Projects along the gravel roads that surround our treasured lakes. The talk addressed common gravel road management issues, culvert upgrades, potential funding programs, permitting & design constraints, and more.

The presentation included information on why roads are important, road challenges, identifying, developing and prioritizing road projects, design considerations, implementation and funding.

This was our 8th Webinar in a series on Clean Water Projects.

Speaker:

Patrick Hurley is Memphremagog Watershed Association‘s Project Manager and leads the organization’s technical and programmatic work related to restoration project assessment, survey, design, permitting, and construction oversight. Prior to joining MWA, Patrick spent nine years in various technical roles as a water quality scientist, hydrologist, and ecological restoration specialist for ICF Jones & Stokes, Watershed Consulting, LLC, and Winden Water, LLC.
