Federation of Vermont Lakes and Ponds sponsors a yearly Scholarship; the recipient for 2013 is Evie Brahmstedt.
I am 18 years old and currently live in Highgate Springs. I have recently graduated from Missisquoi Valley Union High School and have been accepted to St. Lawrence University. I plan on looking into a double major of Environmental Studies and English. While I am at St. Lawrence University I hope to take full advantage of their many opportunities to build a strong understanding and connection to the Earth.
Ever since I can remember I have spent the vast majority of my free time outside. Whether that was exploring the woods behind my house, running through our fields with our dogs, boating on Lake Champlain and the Missisquoi River, or camping with my family, I always made memories and found comfort in the natural world. Camping has always been the highlight of the summer for me because not only do I get to connect with nature, I get to do it with my family. Every summer we go camping at either the Averill Lakes or Norton Pond. For my family and I, camping by a body of water has always been a must, and each camping trip we make sure to plan a hiking trip up one of the nearby mountains. These memories have assisted in creating my love of nature and have impacted me in such a way that I can think of no better way of spending my life than protecting the Earth that has made me the person I am today.
